Strengthening the culture of safety in schools amid education emergencies, DepEd Calamba City conducted the Training-Workshop on the Enhancement of Multi-Hazard Contingency Plan at Chipeco Hall, Jose Rizal Memorial School on March 10, 2023.

In her message, OIC-SDS Gerlie Ilagan, CESO VI, expressed confidence in the capability of the school DRRM Coordinators as “you take the lead in empowering the learners and personnel to ensure safety, learning continuity, and resilient recovery in the context of natural and human-induced hazards.” She also encouraged them to strengthen the conduct of multi-hazard drills and other activities for disaster prevention, mitigation, and preparedness in schools.

OIC-ASDS Jaypee E. Lopo emphasized that having well-prepared contingency plans is crucial to minimize the impact of disasters as “education must continue despite disruptions.” He challenged the participants to come up with scenario-based response plans to protect the lives of learners, school personnel, and the community as well.

Meanwhile, PDO II Ariel D. Antonio led the discussion and workshop on the enhancement of schools’ contingency plans through the conduct of hazard assessment and risk analysis. Participants worked on the identification of specific types of disasters to which their respective schools are prone such as floods, typhoons, earthquakes, and other man-made hazards.

This effort of the Division is part of the DREAM Project, specifically R-Reintegrate learners’ safe return to school system. Series of capacity-building and enhancement of plan sessions are scheduled to be conducted in the coming months.
