SDO Calamba City holds a division-wide roll-out of Early Language Literacy and Numeracy (ELLN) focusing on the Science of Reading for key stage 1 teachers on January 23-26, 2024 at Gabaldon Hall, Jose Rizal Memorial School.
 
In her inspirational message, Dr. Mariliza T. Espada, Curriculum Implementation Division (CID) Chief, mentioned one of Socrates’ philosophies “Education is the kindling of flame not the filling of a vessel.” She underscored that in this transformative journey, teachers are not merely imparting knowledge but more on igniting a passion for learning. Also, the significant role of the teachers in developing the reading habits and interests of learners is vital.
 
Moreover, she shared that this Science of Reading is a guiding beacon which is more than an approach, it is a commitment to understanding the very essence of language and numeracy development since it draws upon evidence-based practices rooted in the latest findings from cognitive science, to illuminate the path toward a comprehensive and effective education.
 
Dr. Andrea C. Senadoza, EPS in English delivered the statement of purpose highlighting the objectives of the training and this is to upskill reading coordinators in knowledge-based pedagogy and become effective reading planners. Also, to discuss the Science of reading, the what’s and the how’s. In addition, to support and nurture reading focusing on assessment and to promote a culture of reading in the school and in the communities.
 
The training-workshop is facilitated by the pool of school head -trainers from Real Elementary School, Mrs. Lorna T. Alcover, Dr. Pedrito H. Bolante of Lecheria ES, Mr. Noli B. Taroy of Crossing ES, Mrs. Amor H. Tuiza of Majada Out ES, Mrs. Carmina S. Taip of E. Barretto ES, Mr. Melecio P. Regucera of Siranglupa ES, Mrs. Marivic M. Aldave of Parian ES, Mr. Rodel DC. Hernandez of Laguerta ES, Mrs. Vienna M. Bondoc of Paciano ES, and Mrs. Jocelyn V. Reyes of Calamba ES.
 
The participants are expected to prepare an action plan for the school-wide Learning Action Cell (LAC) sessions to be cascaded in their respective schools.
