In a bid to raise awareness and combat violence against women and children, Atty. Jonas Anton M. Manalo, Attorney V of the National Police Commission Regional Office MIMAROPA, addressed personnel of the Schools Division Office of Calamba City during the 2024 Culminating Activity for the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Their Children at Bulwagang Rizal, 4th floor of the DepEd main building on December 4, 2024.
ย
Atty. Manalo highlighted that violence under Republic Act No. 9262, also known as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act, can take various forms: physical, psychological, financial or economic, and emotional abuse. He described these as grave violations of human rights that require immediate action.
ย
In his discussion, Atty. Manalo shed light on everyday behaviors that may constitute abuse. He explained that regularly asking about a womanโs whereabouts, prohibiting her from wearing certain clothing, such as cropped tops or short shorts, and forcing her to agree to a joint savings account are all manifestations of controlling behavior, a form of emotional and psychological abuse.
ย
He further elaborated on stonewalling, describing it as an abusive method where the perpetrator cuts off all communication, using the “silent treatment” to manipulate the victim into submission.
ย
In his closing remarks, Atty. Manalo highlighted key steps to address and prevent VAW: educate all genders about their rights and responsibilities, practice self-respect and avoid tolerating abuse, value personal well-being by prioritizing peace of mind, and encourage victims to seek help before abuse escalates.
